Captain Cheryl Barr - Cruising Nova Scotia and Newfoundland Zoom presentation January 18, 2024

About this event

For the cruising sailboat taking a month to venture up the coast of Nova Scotia and another month to sail the fjords along the southern coast of Newfoundland, as our club is planning to do in 2024 and 2025, Cheryl will provide an insider’s view of how best to do this trip and where to go together with a few tips and traps for the unwary.

In the forward to one of her cruising guides, Cheryl describes this region as one “renowned not only for its spectacular coastal scenery but also for the warmth of its welcome. Nowhere in North America is there such an extraordinary combination of history, wilderness and beauty as what the thinly populated Maritime Provinces and French-speaking archipelago of Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon and the Magdalen Islands offer”.

We will learn through her presentation how to capture that experience.

At age seven, Cheryl’s parents purchased and converted a Newfoundland fishing schooner.

Upon completion of that project, she joined them sailing it to the Caribbean.

Home schooled onboard, and sailing the world - Cheryl went on to get a degree in marine biology from Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

As a marine biologist, Cheryl worked in Australia, Canada and South Africa.

She is a certified welder - a skill she applied in building a 62 foot steel schooner.
She took the schooner out for a maiden voyage non-stop to Cuba.

Cheryl obtained a 200 ton Yacht Masters license in the UK.

She has worked globally in the mega yacht industry, and now Cheryl brings us several invaluable cruising guides on her home waters, Atlantic Canada.

IMPORTANT ZOOM MEETING INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Please register as registration allows a streamlined meeting start-up.

2. It is strongly recommended that you install the Zoom application on your desktop or mobile device. During the install, please set your screen display name to the name you used to register for this event.

3. As a point of courtesy to other club members, please think of your screen name as the same as your BWSC badge. It’s much more friendly talking to Joe Smith instead of “Joe’s iPad”. The meeting host may gently remind you by saying “I see that Ken just joined the meeting – can you identify yourself?”

4. We recommend visiting zoom.us/test in your browser before the meeting. You can see how you look on camera, if your background looks ok, adjust your lighting, and check if your zoom client is up-to-date.
