Preparing Your Boat for Offshore Racing and Cruising

About this event

Offshore sailing can expose boats and crews to wind and sea conditions that are rarely seen in costal cruises, and there is no safe harbor to wait out the blow.

BWSC members Tom Greaves and Auguste will share their experiences of readying their boats for offshore racing and offshore cruising.

Tom has a 1984 Bristol 35.5 that he outfitted for the 2023 Marion Bermuda Race.

Auguste has a 2015 Bavaria Vision 42 that he readied for the 2022 and 2024 Newport-Bermuda Races and a 2022 trip to Antigua.

They’ll discuss race safety requirements and the upgrades to interior, cockpit, rigging, electrical systems, steering systems, sails, and safety equipment that they did to prepare their boats.

There will be plenty of time for questions and discussion.

Tom Greaves is race director of BWSC. He executed a refit of his wife’s 1984 Bristol 35.5C Wind Chime to prepare for the Marion Bermuda 2023 which he completed with fellow BWSC members Jack Savage and Chris Callahan, and one other crew member, John Dillon.

Auguste Fortin is rear commodore of BWSC. He has skippered PAX, his Bavaria Vision 42 in two Bermuda Races, and spent the winter of 2022-23 sailing to and around the Caribbean.

IMPORTANT ZOOM MEETING INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Please register as registration allows a streamlined meeting start-up.

2. It is strongly recommended that you install the Zoom application on your desktop or mobile device. During the install, please set your screen display name to the name you used to register for this event.

3. As a point of courtesy to other club members, please think of your screen name as the same as your BWSC badge. It’s much more friendly talking to Joe Smith instead of “Joe’s iPad”. The meeting host may gently remind you by saying “I see that Ken just joined the meeting – can you identify yourself?”

4. We recommend visiting zoom.us/test in your browser before the meeting. You can see how you look on camera, if your background looks ok, adjust your lighting, and check if your zoom client is up-to-date.
