Many of us who sail distance do so in a group of boats such as the ARC Rally boats or the Salty Dawgs. People often do this as a “bucket list” item checking off each spot and claiming gratification that “I’ve done the Galapagos” or “I’ve done the circumnavigation”. David’s trip, starting in 2000 - but likely starting when he was learning to walk, was not that premeditated nor did it have circumnavigation as the primary goal. Instead, David sailed with his wife and four kids, home schooling them along the way and taking whatever amount of time felt right in the various islands and countries they visited. In 2010, David, his wife and 3 of his 4 kids subsequently sailed the west coast of Greenland and back going as far north as Illulisat in Disko Bay. They all came back very different people from when they started their circumnavigation; and to this day, David’s big regret is that he never went back to do the Northwest Passage. Through his account of these travels, we will get some idea about what it means to undertake and achieve such voyages and perhaps gain some understanding of how it can change your life.
